With celebrities changing their hair colour more often than most of us change our bedding (according to the latest research) more and more pressure is being put on stylists by customers who don’t realise that it’s more than just a quick trip to the salon. As well as the aftercare, getting from dark brown to platinum, for example, is a lengthy and costly process; something which many are not prepared for.
Kim Kardashian is the latest celeb to unveil a dramatic new look as she revealed her new ‘on-trend’ silver look at New York Fashion Week.
The look, the result of a reported 15-hours in the colourist’s chair, is likely to prompt a dramatic rise in makeovers after all she is the queen of Instagram, which now provides one of the biggest sources of inspiration.
To help educate customers on what to expect and to help fellow stylists lower unrealistic expectations, award-winning hairdresser, Jamie Stevens appeared on Lorraine to reveal the real process and the not so instagrammable middle stages that happen with these changes.
The British Hairdresser of the Year nominee was assisted by Creative Director Ashleigh Hodges and Stylist Matt Cahill as the trio worked over two days with model Jessica to achieve the stunning end result.
The journey began on Monday morning in Jamie’s Kensington salon where the team prepped Jessica’s hair for the silver colour by taking the colour through two rounds of lifting up to a bright, clean yellow which took 5 and a half hours.
The second part of the journey then started at 7am on Thursday before the big reveal at 9.30am live on the Lorraine show. Speaking about the makeover Jamie said: “I want to help people understand that we can only do so much in a certain time and how sometimes, #instagramgoals aren’t achieved in one appointment!
“Slowly, slowly wins the race and we’ve always got to be thinking about the condition and integrity of the hair throughout the process.”
He added: “This silver trend isn’t for everybody, we have to take skin tone and eye colour into account at every stage. Going from dark to blonde or silver is a marathon, not a sprint.
“To create this look we started with a double pre-lightener application on the mid-lengths and ends before a second application on the roots all with 6%. To tone to the silver we used 30ml 10A +30ml 10v +10ml 8v and a dot of SoBoos Blue.”
